Mobility

Whilst working with clients, I pay a lot of attention to mobility and how it can be improved. I have a strong belief that the more mobile you are the more you can get out of your training and the less likely you are to get injured.

Mobility is a person’s ability to move freely and efficiently through a full range of motion at the joints, with control, stability, and strength. It combines flexibility, muscle strength, coordination, and motor control to allow for functional, pain-free movement in everyday activities and exercise.

The main areas of Mobility

  • Joint Health
  • Muscle Control and Strength
  • Functional Movement
  • Injury Prevention
  • Performance Enhancement

What’s the difference between mobility and flexibility?

Flexibility and mobility are often used in the same way but they are different in terms of movement and performance:

Flexibility is the ability to move the joints and muscles through their full range of motion.

Mobility is the ability to move a joint through its full range of motion with control and strength requiring stability and coordination.

For example:

Flexibility is being able to touch your toes while standing to stretch your hamstrings.

Mobility is being able to actively lift your leg or stabilize your pelvis while doing it.
