Technique Sessions

Whether you’re an experienced lifter or a beginner in the gym, learning and mastering proper technique is essential and has many long term benefits. This is why technique training is important.

With years of gym experience and working with clients to improve their technique I often provide technique sessions for clients. These are different from a normal program as they specifically work on the technique of a client on one or more exercises.

What are the benefits of improving my technique?

Reduce risk of injury:

  • Using incorrect form places unnecessary stress on joints including the spine, knees and shoulders.

Maximize the effect on the correct muscles:

  • Correct technique targets the correct muscles leading to better results.
  • Ensures maximum efficiency so you get the most out of each set/rep.

Better Muscle Activation:

  • Proper form leads to full range of motion, which promotes greater muscle activation.
  • Ensures that supporting muscles (like stabilizers and core) are also trained effectively.
  • Helps avoid muscle imbalances that can lead to posture issues and uneven strength development.

Increases Confidence and Consistency:

  • Knowing you are lifting correctly boosts confidence in your training.
  • You’re more likely to stick with a routine when you feel competent and pain-free.

Foundation for Progression:

  • With a solid technique you can progress safely; increasing weight and complexity of your exercises.
  • A good foundation and technique understanding allows you to safely transition to more complex exercises. Eg olympic lifting, powerlifting etc.

Some basics you should always adopt:

Always use the right weight; don’t use a weight that leads to you using incorrect technique to lift it.

Always take time to set up for the exercise and your posture correctly.

Don’t rush any exercise; perform controlled, powerful concentric movement (eg. Lifting a weight) and slow, controlled eccentric movement (eg. lowering the weight).
